UNILAG begins probe as alleged contaminated water sparks fear among students
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has begun investigations into reports of alleged contamination of the water supply in some halls of residence, following concerns raised by students.
Reports indicate that there was anxiety on campus on Wednesday after some students in a female hostel complained of vomiting, stooling and other health issues, alleging that the water supplied to some hostels had been contaminated.
In a statement, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, spokesperson for the university, said the attention of the management had been drawn to the reports, noting that “the matter is being treated with utmost urgency and seriousness.”
The university’s spokesperson said relevant departments have commenced a thorough assessment of the water supply system, including necessary water quality tests, to determine the accuracy of the reports and identify any potential risks.
She added that immediate interventions have been put in place to ensure the welfare, health and safety of all students are adequately protected.
Alaga-Ibraheem urged members of the campus community to refrain from spreading unverified information that may cause unnecessary panic.
She added that official updates and directives on the situation would be communicated through approved channels once the assessment is concluded.
The university’s spokesperson also reaffirmed the management’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive environment for learning, noting that all necessary actions required to address any issues identified would be taken.
Meanwhile, the university’s Students’ Union Government (SUG) also said it had been monitoring developments and engaging relevant authorities on the development.
Akinpelu Bolaji, president of the union, said in a statement that “investigations are still ongoing, and no definitive link has been established between the reported health cases and the university’s hostel water supply.”
Bolaji said medical officials at the university’s healthcare centre had not medically linked the reported cases to the water system, adding that some of the affected students reside off campus.
He, however, noted that inspections carried out after reports of discoloured water in one hostel block traced the issue to a borehole serving that facility.
Following the discovery, the union president said the university suspended water supply from the affected source and provided alternative arrangements for residents.
He added that water samples had been collected from hostels for laboratory analysis, with results expected within 48 hours.
The president urged students to remain calm and avoid speculation pending the outcome of the tests.(TheCable)
