Lagos Assembly begins oversight of council projects

The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development will commence a comprehensive inspection of projects across the 57 local government areas and local council development areas in the state on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The committee said the exercise was part of the Assembly’s constitutional oversight responsibility aimed at promoting accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery at the grassroots level.

Chairman of the committee, Sanni Babatunde, said the inspection would enable members to assess the progress of ongoing and completed projects, evaluate their impact on residents, and ensure that public funds allocated for development were judiciously utilised.

“The oversight exercise is an integral part of the constitutional duties of the Lagos State House of Assembly to ensure accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery at the grassroots level,” Babatunde said.

He noted that local governments remained the closest level of government to the people and were responsible for providing essential services and infrastructure within communities.

According to him, the committee would inspect projects including road construction and rehabilitation, drainage infrastructure, healthcare facilities, educational projects, markets, community development initiatives, and other interventions executed by the councils.

Babatunde stressed that the exercise was not aimed at witch-hunting any council administration but was designed to strengthen good governance and encourage efficient management of public resources.

“The oversight exercise is not intended for a witch-hunt but rather to promote good governance, strengthen institutional accountability, and encourage efficient utilisation of public resources,” he said.

The committee said the inspection tour would provide an opportunity to determine whether projects were executed according to approved specifications and aligned with residents’ needs.

It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies and programmes that would enhance grassroots development, improve local governance, and raise the standard of living across the state.
