World Cup: Ghana shut out England in frustrating goalless draw

England failed to beat Ghana in their second game of Group L of the 2026 World Cup at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday.

The Three Lions struggled to break the stubborn, compact defensive structure of Carlos Queiroz’s Black Stars to play out a frustrating goalless draw.

The result halts England’s brilliant start to the competition and delayed their quest for early qualification to the knockout stages. Both England and Ghana are tied at the top of Group L with four points each and one more round of games to go.

Having witnessed England’s clinical nature against Croatia, Queiroz opted for tactical discipline, setting the Black Stars up in a rigid 5-4-1 defensive structure. The strategy paid off.

Thomas Partey returned to the Ghanaian midfield after missing the first game against Panama, and he was alert to plug all loopholes as Jude Bellingham and Elliot Anderson struggled to locate the passing channels that served them so well in England’s opener.

Although, Three Lions dominated the ball possession, they did very little with it mostly throughout the game.

Harry Kane, chasing a milestone goal to eclipse Gary Lineker as England’s all-time top World Cup scorer, was starved of service.

Jonas Adjetey and Jerome Opoku swarmed the England captain at every turn.

Tuchel grew visibly agitated on the sidelines in the second half. The German manager brought on Bukayo Saka for Anthony Gordon while Nico O’Reilly came on for Djed Spence.

The structural tweaks brought a brief flurry of intensity. Bellingham found joy drifting into inside-right channels, and Rice saw a drilled effort deflected just over Benjamin Asare’s crossbar.

Ghana tried severally to hit England on the counter, utilising the pace of Iñaki Williams and strength of Antoine Semenyo but the end product was shoddy.

In the dying stages, the Black Stars withdrew further into their shell, successfully running down the clock with the late introductions of Kojo Oppong and Baba Rahman. (TheCable)
