Oluwo Sparks Controversy, Rejects Yoruba Heritage, Praises Saudi Culture

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has stirred fresh controversy following remarks in which he distanced himself from Yoruba cultural identity, declaring a strong personal alignment with Saudi culture.

Speaking during an interaction with a group of northern Muslim visitors, the monarch reportedly stated that he does not believe in traditional Yoruba customs, stressing instead that his convictions and lifestyle are rooted in Saudi Arabian culture.

The Oluwo explained that his preference influences even his mode of dressing, noting that he often adopts Saudi style attire as a reflection of his beliefs and identity.

In a more provocative statement, the traditional ruler expressed a desire to alter his ancestral origin, saying he would change it from Ile-Ife the cradle of Yoruba civilization—to Saudi Arabia if it were possible within his lifetime.

He further remarked that he wished Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba people, had origins in Saudi Arabia a comment that has already begun to generate reactions across cultural and traditional circles.

The statements are expected to deepen ongoing debates about identity, tradition, and the role of modern traditional rulers in preserving indigenous heritage.
