Cash-Strapped Barcelona Seeks €210m Loan For Transfers, Operations
Spanish La Liga club Barcelona is set to collect a huge loan to finance the upcoming season.
According to report in Spain, the La Liga champions are still suffering from financial issues and will borrow 210 million Euros, with majority of the funds going into player purchase.
The Catalans bought Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United in a 70 million Euros deal that could rise to 80 million, thanks to the club’s return to the 1:1 transfer rule in Spain.
However, there is need for more investment in players with the trio of Joao Cancelo, Julian Alvarez, and Kaim Adeyemi line up to bolster the attack for further push in Europe.
The transfers would require hefty financial implications that Barcelona cannot afford, and would require the club’s hierarchy to dip hands into the financial market.
According to Marca, Barcelona will also use majority of the loan to bolster its work force, while some will will e used to cover payroll and other day-to-day operating expenses. The Camp Nou club will also pay the loan with projected revenue for the new season.
Barcelona have won the Spanish La Liga in the past two seasons, but have continued to struggle in Europe where they have failed to win the UEFA Champions League since 2015.
The club has won three La Liga titles since its financial issues that reached a tipping point where several levers were activated, but currently has a loan bill of over 1.6 billion Euros.
