Argentina survive Swiss scare to reach World Cup last four
Argentina remained on course to defend their FIFA World Cup title after defeating Switzerland 3-1 after extra time to book a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 tournament.
Lionel Scaloni’s men took an early lead at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City when Alexis Mac Allister finished off a brilliant pass from captain Lionel Messi in the 10th minute.
Switzerland responded strongly after the interval and drew level midway through the second half through Dan Ndoye, forcing a nervy finish.
The Swiss suffered a setback when Breel Embolo was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for simulation, leaving his side to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Despite the dismissal, Switzerland defended resolutely and held Argentina until extra time.
The breakthrough finally came in the 112th minute when Julian Alvarez curled a superb effort into the top corner beyond the reach of the Swiss goalkeeper.
Lautaro Martínez added a late third to seal the victory and send the defending champions into the last four.
The win extended Argentina’s unbeaten World Cup run to 12 matches and moved them closer to becoming the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully retain the title.
Argentina will now face England in a mouth-watering semi-final in Atlanta after the Three Lions defeated Norway 2-1 to secure their place in the final four.
