Ghanaian Tiktoker jailed for claiming President Mahama ‘buried 32 cows’ to secure 2024 election victory

An Accra circuit court in Ghana has sentenced Camilla Alhassan, a Tiktoker, to one year imprisonment for claiming that Ghanaian President John Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to secure victory in the 2024 elections.

Mahama was first elected Ghana president in 2012. He returned to the office in 2024 following a landslide victory at the polls.

According to Channel OneTV, the court on Thursday handed down the sentence after Alhassan pleaded guilty to offensive conduct and publication of false news.

After the verdict, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, counsel to the Tiktoker, said the court struck out the charge of electronic abuse over lack of jurisdiction.

Bonsu explained that the court held that it did not have the legal authority to determine that particular charge.

The counsel said a plea was made for the court to hand a lenient sentence but the judge ruled that owing to the increasing rate of similar offences, a sentence was needed as a deterrent.

The Tiktoker was arrested by the Ghana Police Service after her videos on the defamatory comments went viral on social media.(TheCable)
