BREAKING: Spain dethrone Argentina, emerge 2026 World Cup champions
European champions Spain this Sunday night (Nigerian Time), July 19, 2026, dethroned defending champions Argentina after a hard-fought victory in the final match of the 2026 World Cup decided at MetLife Stadium in New York, USA.
Just as they did in the semi-finals against star-studded France, Spain, featuring child prodigy Lamine Yamal, effectively neutralised the Argentines and their talisman, the legendary Lionel Messi.
However, despite their total dominance of the game, the Spaniards were denied a goal throughout the 90 minutes duration time – thanks to the wizardry of goalie Martinez.
That forced the match into extra time, the first half of which also ended barren despite the Argentines being a man down following the expulsion of Enzo Fernández who received a second yellow card for rough play in the 93rd minute.
Victory eventually swung to Spain on the restart for the final 15 minutes of extra time, when Ferran Torres riffled home an assist by Nico Williams.
Shakira, Burna Boy, Madonna, Justin Bieber and BTS performed during the half-time show, thus adding more glamour to the match attended by a galaxy of high profile personalities, including US President Donald Trump.
