FA introduces minimum 10-match ban for discrimination in English football

The Football Association (FA) has introduced a tougher anti-discrimination policy that will see players, managers and members of technical staff found guilty of discriminatory conduct receive a minimum 10-match suspension from the start of the new season, according to the BBC.

The new sanction, agreed by the FA, Premier League, English Football League, National League and Women’s Super League, replaces the previous standard minimum six-match suspension for aggravated breaches of FA Rule E3.2, which covers misconduct involving references to race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation and disability.

The strengthened punishment forms part of the FA’s commitment to creating what it described as “a game free from discrimination.”

“While significant progress has been made in recent years, discriminatory conduct continues to be a challenge across the game,” the FA said in a statement quoted by the BBC.

“Enhanced measures are necessary to tackle this abhorrent conduct.”

Under the revised disciplinary framework, regulatory commissions may impose bans longer than 10 matches where significant aggravating factors exist.

However, the FA said suspensions can be reduced to a minimum of six matches only in exceptional circumstances, such as where there are strong mitigating factors or an individual admits the offence at the earliest opportunity.

Repeat offenders could face suspensions exceeding 12 matches or lengthy time-based bans in particularly serious cases.

The changes follow calls for stricter sanctions after reports showed discrimination cases across English football reached record levels last season. The revised regulations will apply across all competitions under the FA’s jurisdiction from the 2026-27 campaign, the BBC reported.
