Xenophobia: Oborevwori Approves ₦2m Grant For Evacuated Deltans

Delta State Governor,  Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved a reintegration package for Deltan indigenes evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks on African immigrants.

He announced a ₦2 million grant for each affected family alongside monthly welfare stipends to help them rebuild their lives.

The governor, who  disclosed this Friday in Asaba, said the support is aimed at easing the hardship faced by the returnees, many of whom lost their businesses, property and means of livelihood during the attacks.

“Under the package, each individual returnee will receive a monthly stipend of ₦200,000, while every affected family will receive ₦300,000 monthly beginning from August 2026 until May 29, 2027, when the governor’s first tenure ends.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo, Governor Oborevwori described the xenophobic attacks as a grave assault on human dignity.

According to him,  no individual should be subjected to violence, intimidation or discrimination because of nationality.

The governor also announced free medical screening for all returnees at state-owned health facilities, as well as trauma counselling and psychosocial support through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services.

Oborevwori urged Deltans to embrace the returnees with compassion and solidarity, assuring them that the unfortunate experience would not define their future.

Speaking for the returnees, Mr. Jacob Agbada described the intervention as timely and life-changing, saying the ₦2 million family grant and monthly stipends had restored hope to families who had lost almost everything.
