Canada releases 10 tips to prevent immigration application delays
The Government of Canada has released a list of 10 key tips to help travellers, immigrants, and prospective citizens submit complete applications and avoid mistakes that could delay processing.
In a post obtained from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s X handle on Saturday, the guidance encourages applicants to complete and submit their applications online, noting that the digital system helps identify missing information before submission.
Applicants are also advised to answer every question on the application form and write “N/A” where a question does not apply.
According to the government, applicants should use the official document checklist available for each immigration program and ensure that any document not written in English or French is translated by a certified translator.
Officials also reminded applicants to submit only the required documents, avoid sending original copies unless requested, and ensure that passport photographs meet the prescribed specifications.
The government further emphasized the importance of declaring all family members in an application, even if they are not accompanying the applicant to Canada. Applicants are also urged to provide accurate contact information, including an active email address and complete mailing address.
In addition, applicants are advised to sign and date all required documents, pay the correct application fees using the approved payment methods, and respond promptly to any requests for additional information before the specified deadline.
Canadian authorities said following these recommendations will help applicants avoid common errors, improve the quality of submissions, and support faster processing of immigration, travel, and citizenship applications.
Here are the 10 tips
1. Apply online.
Applying online helps ensure your application is complete before you submit it.
2. Answer every question.
If a question does not apply to your situation, write “N/A” (Not Applicable).
3. Use the document checklist.
Most application programs provide a downloadable document checklist on their webpage. Use it to make sure you’ve included everything required.
4. Translate documents when necessary.
If any of your documents are not in English or French, have them translated by a certified translator.
5. Submit only the required documents.
If copies are requested, do not send original documents. Follow the instructions carefully and include only the documents requested.
6.Follow the photo requirements.
Take the photo specifications with you to your photographer and check that your photos meet the requirements before submitting them.
7. Declare all family members.
Include every family member in your application, even if they are not travelling or immigrating to Canada with you.
8. Verify your contact information.
Provide an email address you check regularly, and ensure your contact details and mailing address are accurate and complete.
9. Sign your documents and pay the correct fees.
Sign and date every document that requires it, and make sure you pay the correct fees using an accepted payment method.
10. Respond promptly to requests for additional information.
If you’re asked to provide more information or documents, submit them by the deadline to avoid delays in processing your application.
