Adeleke’s victory is proof that our votes can end this economic hardship – Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says Ademola Adeleke’s re-election as governor of Osun shows that democracy is strongest when citizens are vigilant.

Adeleke, the candidate of Accord, was declared winner of the 2026 gubernatorial election on Sunday morning after securing 511,067 votes to defeat Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 444,815 votes.

Najeem Salaam, the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was a distant third with 17,180 votes.

In a statement on X on Sunday, Obi said the people of Osun had “spoken with courage and clarity” in reaffirming their right to choose their leaders.

He said Adeleke’s renewed mandate reflected the governor’s commitment to the people, understanding of their needs and achievements in office.

Obi congratulated Adeleke on his victory, describing it as a significant democratic achievement and a demonstration of the power of the people.

The former Anambra governor commended youths in the state for the peaceful and courageous defence of their votes.

According to him, their vigilance and determination showed that citizens can protect their democratic mandates when they stand firmly to defend their votes.

“The lesson from Osun is clear: democracy is strongest when citizens are alert, informed and conscious of their civic responsibilities,” he said.

Obi said every valid vote must be respected and every lawful mandate upheld.

Ahead of the 2027 general election, he urged Nigerians to remain informed, participate actively in the electoral process, vote and protect their ballots.

He said Nigerians facing hunger, insecurity and deprivation have the power, through their votes, to demand the change needed to address the challenges.

Obi also called on political actors to prioritise the interests of citizens over partisan considerations and embrace peace, unity and the rule of law.

He said elections should not be contests of violence but a competition of ideas, competence, character and service.

Obi expressed hope that the Osun election would strengthen Nigerians’ confidence in the democratic process and encourage citizens to remain committed to building a just, secure and prosperous country.
