‘Bus Aunty’ did not get London bus stop named after her – TfL clarifies
A temporary sign bearing the name of Nigerian content creator “Bus Aunty” was not an official renaming of a London bus stop, the city’s transport network has said.
On Wednesday, Bemi Orojuogun, a Nigerian mental health nurse and content creator popularly known as “Bus Aunty”, shared an Instagram post showing her taking a tour of Transport for London’s (TfL) control centre.
“Bus Aunty has her own bus stop! My goodness, I’m very lucky. Thank you so much TFL!” Orojuogun said in the clip, standing behind a bus stop signage that said “Welcome Bus Aunty”.
TfL is a local government body responsible for most of the transport network in London, United Kingdom, including the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway, as well as the city’s buses, taxis, principal road routes, cycling provision, trams, and river services.
Orojuogun gained popularity documenting her fascination with the city’s buses. In many of her clips, she appears to stand close to passing buses, a visual effect that initially led some viewers to question whether she was putting herself in danger.
She later explained that the apparent proximity was created by the camera angle and editing, and that she keeps a safe distance from the vehicles while filming.
Her distinctive videos have helped her build a sizeable online following, led to collaborations with brands, and meetings with state officials including Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
Following her tour of TfL’s control centre and her excitement over what appeared to be “her own bus stop”, reports circulated that the city had officially named a bus stop after her.
On Friday, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), congratulatedOrojuogun on the reported honour.
In a statement issued Friday by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM head of media, Dabiri-Erewa described the “recognition” as a remarkable achievement and a source of pride to Nigeria and the Nigerian diaspora.

‘TEMPORARY SIGN’
A TfL spokesperson told TheCable that the organisation was delighted to welcome Bus Aunty to its control centre but clarified that the display was not an official renaming.
“The ‘Welcome Bus Aunty’ message was temporarily displayed at a bus stop in Southwark as part of the visit, and was not an official renaming of a bus stop,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
The official noted that buses are one of the best ways to explore London, connecting communities and helping millions of people travel across the capital every day, and added that TfL valued Bus Aunty’s ongoing support for buses and London’s extensive bus network (TheCable)
