Tony Elumelu Forgives, Reunites With Lady Who Called Him By His First Name
Billionaire businessman and United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has reportedly reconciled with the young lady who recently went viral after addressing him simply as “Tony” during a corporate event.
The incident occurred during the graduation ceremony of UBA’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP), where 374 young professionals were celebrated after completing the programme.
During an interaction at the event, the young woman greeted Elumelu, saying, “Good morning, Tony.” The businessman initially appeared to mishear her, asking if she had said “Toyin.” When she clarified that she had called him Tony, Elumelu corrected her.
“You won’t call me Tony. You’ll call me Mr Elumelu or TOE,” he told her, adding that he did not subscribe to what he described as the “Oyinbo life.”
The brief exchange quickly went viral on social media, generating mixed reactions. While some Nigerians praised Elumelu for making his preferred form of address clear, others felt the young woman may simply have been following the more informal culture common in some modern corporate workplaces.
The controversy subsequently attracted further public attention, with several personalities weighing in on the incident and encouraging a more measured interpretation of what happened.
The latest development suggests that the matter has not resulted in any lasting hard feelings between Elumelu and the young woman. Their reunion has been welcomed by many observers as a reminder that a brief moment of misunderstanding does not necessarily have to define a relationship.
The episode has also sparked a broader conversation about respect, workplace culture and the changing way younger professionals interact with senior executives.
For many Nigerians, the incident ultimately became less about the use of the name “Tony” and more about the importance of understanding the cultural and professional expectations surrounding communication.
Elumelu, who chairs UBA and heads several major business interests, remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent businessmen and philanthropists. His interaction with the young graduate has therefore attracted considerable public interest, particularly because of the way a seemingly ordinary exchange became a viral social-media moment.
The reconciliation has now given the episode a more positive ending, with the focus shifting from the initial correction to forgiveness, understanding and moving forward.
