Malaria Outbreak At Germany Airport Kills Worker, Infects Five Others

A worker at Frankfurt Airport in Germany has died from malaria after an unusual outbreak infected six employees, with health authorities investigating the possibility that infected mosquitoes arrived at the airport on an aircraft.

Fraport, the company that operates Frankfurt Airport, confirmed the worker’s death and said five other employees who contracted the disease are receiving medical treatment, according to the BBC.

The company has informed its workforce about the outbreak and advised employees to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.

According to the report, health authorities suspect that the mosquitoes responsible for the infections may have been brought into Germany aboard an aircraft. Authorities have placed mosquito traps around the airport and will examine captured insects to determine their species and possible origin.

The outbreak is unusual because malaria is rarely transmitted within Germany.

The disease is normally associated with people who have travelled to countries where malaria is widespread, according to Germany’s Robert Koch Institute, the country’s federal disease control agency.

The latest cases were detected among airport employees, raising concerns about local transmission. Health authorities are investigating how the infections occurred and whether mosquitoes carrying the malaria parasite remain present at the airport.

The airport has urged workers to pay attention to possible symptoms and seek medical care promptly. Early diagnosis is important because malaria can become severe, particularly when treatment is delayed.

The outbreak follows an earlier cluster of malaria cases among Frankfurt Airport workers. Four employees had been infected in July, while the latest death brings the number of affected workers to six.

Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It is not normally spread directly from one person to another, making the suspected arrival of infected mosquitoes by aircraft a key focus of the ongoing investigation.

The latest incident is not the first suspected case of airport-linked malaria in Frankfurt. Health authorities recorded another case in 2023, but local transmission of the disease remains rare in Germany.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the airport and analyse mosquitoes caught in traps as they investigate the source of the outbreak.

Nigeria carries the highest burden of malaria in the world, accounting for roughly 27% of all global malaria cases and about 30% to 31% of all global malaria deaths.

Malaria transmission occurs year-round across nearly 100% of the country. Estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that Nigeria records tens of millions of clinical malaria cases every year, with models estimating upwards of 60 to 68 million cases annually.

Children under the age of five and pregnant women face the highest risk of severe illness and mortality. According to WHO and World Malaria Reports, Nigeria accounts for approximately 30.3% to 31.9% of all global malaria deaths. (SaharaReporters)
