Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch is dead
Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 89, the Royal Palace has announced.
The monarch passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35am on Friday, August 28, according to a statement from the palace.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that His Majesty King Harald passed away today,” the palace said.
King Harald had been receiving medical care since August 17 after being diagnosed with haemolytic anaemia, a condition that causes the body to destroy red blood cells faster than they can be replaced.
His health condition reportedly worsened in the days leading to his death, with the palace announcing that he had become “extremely serious” before members of his family rushed to his bedside.
Crown Prince Haakon was said to have remained with his father overnight as the royal family kept vigil.
Following the announcement of his death, the Norwegian flag at the Royal Palace in Oslo was lowered to half-mast as citizens gathered outside to lay flowers and pay tribute to the monarch.
King Harald became Norway’s king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. During his decades on the throne, he was known for his steady leadership and close connection with the Norwegian people.
His death marks the end of one of Europe’s longest modern royal reigns and begins a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy under Crown Prince Haakon, who is expected to succeed him.
Further details on funeral arrangements and official ceremonies are expected to be announced by the palace.
