EPL: Fernandes hattrick inspires Man United rout of Ipswich as Chelsea beat Brighton in 7-goal thriller
Manchestser United came from a goal down to defeat Ipswich Town in their English Premier League (EPL) match at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils were playing their first match at home and Michael Carrick’s side avoided embarrassment with a 5-2 win over the Tractor Boys, with captain Bruno Fernandes leading the comeback victory with a hattrick.
Leif Davis and Chuba Akpom scored Ipswich’s goals in the match.
The hosts were lethargic in the opening exchanges and were bailed out by saves from goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but Ipswich eventually took the lead on 29 minutes when Davis slotted home following good work by Issahaku Fatawu.
However, the visitors allowed Man United a route back into the match when Matheus Cunha capitalised on a defensive slip to race forward and thread the ball to Fernandes who slammed his shot into the net at the near post.
A Jacob Greaves own goal early in the second half handed Man United the lead, and Fernandes doubled it from the penalty spot in the 61st minute before the Portuguese midfielder completed his third Man United hattrick seven minutes later with a precise finish.
Mbeumo joined the party with a lobbed effort on 82 minutes for his first goal of season, but Ipswich got a consolation in added time through Akpom’s strike.
Carrick’s side claimed their first match of the season against an opponent they have not lost against in 29 years.
Earlier, Chelsea continued its winning start to the season with a 4-3 victory over a stubborn Brighton side. Romeo Lavia, Neto, Joao Pedro, and Cole Palmer were all on the scoresheet for Chelsea who handed Emiliano Martinez his debut, and the Argentine goalkeeper conceded thrice but bailed out the Blues with excellent saves against the dogged Seagulls.
