Ghanaian government launches app for lovers to verify each other’s marital status

The Ghanaian ministry of gender has launched an application called ‘Marrify‘ to verify the marital status of prospective lovers before entering into marriage.

The official launch ceremony was recently held in Ghana, with Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the country’s minister of gender, in attendance.

The application was launched in collaboration with MarryRight, an agency specialising in family law and marriage.

Speaking at the event, Lartey said the application was an important step in ensuring that relationships are founded on respect and prevent gender-based violence.

She said the app’s launch offers couples an opportunity to approach marriage with greater awareness and responsibility.

“It is a reminder of the need to uphold the highest standard of integrity and accountability,” she said.

“You would not have to take a person’s word for it, even in the most trusted relationship. You can verify with this app. And then again, when making a decision on the venue, who has to officiate the marriage, where it is officiated, the officiant, and the status of the one you are getting married to.

“These are the critical issues we need to ponder over, verify and be sure of before taking the needed step. As a ministry, we’ve used our platform to promote the app and engage with our stakeholders and potential beneficiaries. To ensure that Ghanaians live in awareness. So that you do not invest for so many years, resources and find out that all the investment has gone in vain.”

On his part, Dennis Adei Dwomoh, founder of Marrify App and the Marriage Governance Conference, decried the state of marriage data management in the country.

The legal practitioner argued that “80% of Ghanaians who are married have not registered their marriage.”(TheCable)
