Basit Kolade: Police detain four suspects over Lagos mob killing
The police command in Lagos has detained four suspects over the alleged mob attack that led to the death of a resident, Basit Kolade. The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
The attack occurred about 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday following a road traffic incident involving Mr Kolade and a motorcycle rider.
Mr Kolade was travelling with his spouse from Ebute Metta to Lagos Island in a black Lexus SUV when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the vehicle from behind, prompting an argument between Mr Kolade and the rider, police said.
The vehicle subsequently reversed and allegedly hit the motorcycle, causing the rider and motorcycle to fall. As a result, a mob emerged and allegedly attacked Mr Kolade with dangerous weapons.
During the mob attack, women in the area rescued Mr Kolade’s spouse, while he was rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital.
Mr Kolade was later confirmed dead at the hospital, while the motorcycle rider survived and was receiving treatment.
The detained suspects are aged between 31 and 33.
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest other persons involved in the mob attack, with a homicide investigation underway. The matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for appropriate legal action.
The spokesperson warned members of the public against mob action, jungle justice and resorting to self-help.
