Building Collapses In Abuja Hours After Sealing

A building has collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, hours after the Development Control Department sealed the structure and directed occupants to vacate.

The FCT Police Command said it received a distress call about the incident at about 7:45 pm on Monday.

According to a statement by the police spokesperson in FCT, Josephine Adeh, on Monday, a police response team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, and the Area Commander, Metro, ACP Georgelyn Ufomadu, was subsequently deployed to the scene.

The command said the police team joined personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service (FFS), Security Service Department, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other relevant emergency agencies in the rescue operation.

According to the police, no victim has so far been confirmed, but search and rescue efforts were still ongoing at the time of the statement to establish whether anyone was trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Preliminary investigations by the command revealed that the building had previously been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja.

The police said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse and its possible cause.

“Further details on the extent of damage will be communicated in due time,” the command said.

The police urged residents to remain calm and security-conscious while advising members of the public to stay away from the affected area and cooperate with emergency responders.

The command also advised members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities or emergencies through its emergency lines. (Daily trust)
