2027: APC Governors Draw Battle Line Against Wike, Reject Any Alliance That Could Threaten Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum has drawn a firm political line against any alliance or political arrangement that could undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, a position that could complicate efforts by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his allies to influence the emerging political realignment.

The governors unanimously resolved that none of their members would participate in, support or endorse any political arrangement capable of weakening the APC, undermining President Tinubu’s re-election or adversely affecting the party’s candidates at any level.

The governors also ruled out arrangements capable of creating confusion, divided loyalty or competing interests within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The resolution comes against the backdrop of intense political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition figures and political actors exploring alliances aimed at challenging the APC and President Tinubu.

Wike, the former Rivers governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has remained an influential figure in Nigeria’s political landscape following his decision to support President Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election despite belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His political network and influence among governors and other political stakeholders have made his position particularly significant as parties and political blocs begin positioning themselves for 2027.

Although the APC Governors’ Forum did not specifically name Wike in its resolution, the warning against political arrangements capable of creating “divided loyalty” is likely to attract attention amid ongoing speculation over possible cross-party alliances ahead of the election.

The governors’ position signals that they intend to protect the APC’s structure and ensure that political alliances do not undermine the party’s candidates or President Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

The forum’s stance could also increase pressure on politicians seeking to maintain relationships across party lines, particularly where such relationships could be perceived as conflicting with the APC’s electoral interests.
