The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) says Nigeria’s crude oil production increased slightly to 1.53 million barrels per day (bpd) in September 2026.

OPEC announced the figure in its monthly oil market report for September, released on Tuesday.

The report showed that the output represents a 2 percent increase from the 1.5 million bpd recorded in August.

OPEC said the September production figure was obtained through direct communication with Nigerian authorities.

The oil alliance said it sources crude oil production data from direct communication with member countries and secondary sources, including energy intelligence platforms.

The figure indicates that Nigeria met its OPEC production quota of 1.5 million bpd for the fifth consecutive month in 2026.

Nigeria produced 1.505 million bpd in July, 1.55 million bpd in June, and 1.53 million bpd in May, according to OPEC data.

The report also showed that Nigeria retained its position as Africa’s leading oil producer, followed by Libya at 1.39 million bpd and Algeria at 1 million bpd.

“Total DoC crude oil production averaged 39.07 mb/d in September 2026, which is about 0.90 mb/d higher, m-o-m,” OPEC said.

On October 10, Taiwo Oyedele, minister of finance, saidthe government had taken steps to boost crude oil production by reducing oil theft and renegotiating “some of the commitments that took our crude away were renegotiated to free some barrels”. (TheCable)
