2027: We know how to stop Tinubu from getting second term - Momodu
Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has declared that the opposition knows how to prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from securing a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
Momodu made the statement during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, where he said opposition figures were working behind the scenes to challenge Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The veteran journalist declined to reveal the opposition’s strategy, arguing that its plans would not be made public ahead of the election.
“I can’t tell you about strategy in public,” Momodu said, drawing a comparison with Tinubu’s political struggle to secure a second term as governor of Lagos State.
He added that opposition politicians were also working hard behind the scenes to prevent the President from returning to the Villa for another four years.
“We are not going to come in public and say this, but we know what to do to make sure that he does not get that second term,” he stated.
Momodu questions INEC’s credibility
Beyond the opposition’s electoral plans, Momodu raised concerns about the perceived independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the Tinubu administration.
He alleged that the President had appointed too many people from the South-West to the electoral body and questioned whether Nigerians could trust the administration to ensure a free and fair election in 2027.
Momodu claimed that doubts about the credibility of the process extended even to some supporters of the President. These remain his allegations and have not, by themselves, established that INEC will conduct a compromised election.
‘Nigerians will determine the outcome’
Momodu also dismissed suggestions that Tinubu would be able to remain in office if he lost the election, arguing that the determination of Nigerians would be decisive.
He said his confidence was not based solely on the ADC but also on what he described as growing public opposition to another Tinubu term.
The ADC chieftain further alleged that governors, judges and legislators were increasingly reluctant to challenge the President, claiming that political pressure had weakened the country’s institutional checks and balances.
What this means for the 2027 election
Momodu’s declaration signals the opposition’s intention to make the 2027 election a serious contest. However, saying that a strategy exists is different from demonstrating that it can succeed.
Several factors will matter as the election approaches:
Opposition unity: Whether opposition parties can agree on a candidate and avoid splitting votes.
Economic conditions: How voters assess inflation, food prices, employment and the effects of the government’s economic reforms.
Electoral credibility: Whether INEC can demonstrate independence, transparency and effective election administration.
Campaign organisation: The ability of parties to mobilise supporters, field candidates nationwide and secure votes.
Regional support: Whether candidates can obtain the required geographical spread of votes under Nigeria’s constitutional rules.
Ultimately, Momodu has not disclosed the specific strategy he says the ADC is preparing. His statement should therefore be understood as a political declaration, rather than evidence that Tinubu’s re-election bid has already been defeated.
