Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed a Nigerian Army major and several soldiers after ambushing a military convoy near Kanamma village in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State.

According to a report published by Tribune Online on October 19, 2026, the attack occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday, when the convoy came under attack along a route that has experienced persistent security challenges.

Explosive device struck lead vehicle

Reports indicate that the attackers first hit the convoy’s lead vehicle with an explosive device before opening fire on the other vehicles. The resulting exchange of gunfire reportedly led to further casualties among the soldiers and the insurgents.

Vanguard reported that at least six soldiers, including the Army major, were feared dead. However, the identities of the deceased and the final casualty figures had not been independently confirmed at the time of publication.

Security concerns along Kanamma route

The ambush highlights continuing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, particularly along the Geidam–Kanamma and Mayamti routes. Sources cited by Vanguard said the routes had remained closed for months because of terrorist activity.

The attack comes amid ongoing military operations against Boko Haram and its rival faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), both of which have repeatedly targeted military personnel and installations in the region.
