‘Where Did You Get the Money to Build University?’ – Tinubu Challenges Atiku Over Funding of American University
President Bola Tinubu has challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to explain the source of funding for the establishment of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), questioning how he was able to build a private university while serving in government.
Tinubu reportedly made the remarks on Saturday, November 7, 2026, during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The President questioned Atiku’s financial capacity to establish the institution, suggesting that public resources may have played a role in financing the university.
He challenged Nigerians to demand an explanation from the former Vice President, asking how he managed to establish such an institution while serving under former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.
“Ask him how he built the university while he was in office as Vice President in charge of our economy. Who built the university for him? It’s your money. It’s your effort,” Tinubu said.
The President’s comments have reignited political discussions about Atiku’s business interests, wealth and the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the American University of Nigeria.
