235 vehicles impounded as LASTMA begins zero-tolerance campaign
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched an enforcement campaign targeting critical traffic corridors in Lagos, aimed at restoring order and improving vehicular movement across the metropolis.
The operation commenced yesterday, with personnel deployed to high-traffic zones, including Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi.
During the exercise, 235 vehicles were impounded for breaching the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. The vehicles included 38 private cars, 156 Volkswagen commercial buses (Danfo), 19 minibuses (Korope)/tricycles, five haulage trucks, and 17 inter-state passenger buses. Violations ranged from encroachment on pedestrian pathways and obstruction of vehicular flow to operating illegal terminals and flouting other traffic regulations.
In one instance, five articulated trucks were intercepted atop the Adeniji Adele Bridge for illegally offloading livestock, including rams and cows, as well as abattoir waste.
The enforcement initiative follows the directive of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who emphasised the need for a coordinated response to address traffic indiscipline in Lagos.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, highlighted the campaign’s objectives: “LASTMA is now operating under a strict zero-tolerance mandate against traffic infractions. All impounded vehicles will be promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution. The era of impunity on our roads is over,” he stated.
“This operation is not targeted at any demographic or commercial interest but aims to rectify systemic dysfunction. We urge all road users to view this as an opportunity for collective civic renewal,” he added.
The campaign will span all five administrative divisions of Lagos State, including Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe. LASTMA and partner agencies are employing a mix of regulatory, logistical, and technological measures to reclaim public roadways and ensure compliance.
Bakare-Oki also warned that vehicles engaging in illegal parking, obstructing traffic flow, or driving against traffic will face immediate impoundment. He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to utilising legal, operational, and digital tools to maintain order across the State’s road network.
Motorists and members of the public are encouraged to report traffic violations, environmental nuisances, or misconduct by LASTMA personnel through the authority’s toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
