3.6m Displaced, Yet You Boast of Revenues — Peter Obi Knocks Tinubu Over Worsening Insecurity
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has slammed Bola Tinubu for boasting about excess revenues while millions of Nigerians remain displaced by insecurity.
Obi warned that the worsening situation has reached an existential level, stressing that no meaningful development can take place without first addressing insecurity.
He cited a 2025 United Nations report which revealed that Nigeria now has over 3.6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).
According to him, the figure is alarming for a country not officially at war, as entire communities have been forced to abandon their homes due to killings, kidnappings and banditry.
The former Anambra governor said the crisis has crippled businesses, destroyed farms, and prevented citizens from living normal lives.
He also noted Amnesty International’s warning that the government’s failure to protect its citizens has emboldened criminal groups and worsened insecurity in the past two years.
Obi lamented that the economic toll has been devastating, as investors flee, local businesses collapse, and millions of children remain out of school.
He added that Nigeria’s ranking among the ten most terrorised countries in the Global Terrorism Index reflects the depth of the crisis.
Calling on Tinubu to take urgent action, Obi urged the government to redirect its reported excess revenues into security and critical areas of development.
“A secure Nigeria will not only give our people peace but also unlock the enormous productivity potential of our country,” Obi said.
