50 Cent says Los Angeles ‘finished’ as city implements free-bail policy for criminals

American hip-hop rapper, Curtis Jackson, popularly known as 50 Cent, says Los Angeles is “finished” after a free-bail policy was implemented in the state.

The popular rapper made the comment via an Instagram post, saying criminality would get worse after the policy was reinstated. “LA is finished watch how bad it gets out there. SMH [shaking my head],” he wrote.

The 48-year-old rapper included a video of a TV segment about the court rulings, which dismissed bail because it is unconstitutional to keep people in bars when they cannot meet bail conditions.

In May, the superior court in Los Angeles ruled in favour of six activists who filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging that the system was unconstitutional and favours the affluent.

However, Los Angeles County reported that crime had been on the rise following the implementation of the law but it will ensure that the policy is enforced in the state.

“The Department is aware of the preliminary injunction regarding the cash bail system, and of course will comply with any court-ordered bail schedule,” the statement said.

“The County is also working with the court and other stakeholders to explore ways to reduce the number of people held before arraignment because they can’t afford bail and to provide the Sheriff greater release options to safely reduce the jail population, while always prioritising public safety.”
