The live-action remake of the 1992 animated classic, which stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, has already made $343 million in the United States alone. Highlighting the success of the film in the United States, Disney have said: ‘Aladdin has seen robust week-to-week performance throughout its run. ‘It debuted over the four-day Memorial Day weekend with $117 million domestically and has remained in the top seven over the course of its nine-week run, earning a total of $343 million to date.’

Disney also mentioned that the Guy-Ritchie directed motion picture has also achieved success in other overseas markets, such as the United Kingdom, China, Korea and Japan, which is the film’s ‘top international market.’ ‘Internationally, it has brought in $656 million and continues to draw audiences throughout the world,’ Disney stated.

‘The top international market is Japan, where the film is about to pass the $100 million mark following on from very strong holds since its opening on June 7.’ It has also become the ‘highest grossing release of all time’ in the Middle East, which is no surprise seeing as the film is set in the region.

Mena Massaoud, who plays Aladdin, also spoke about the film’s big success in an Instagram video. ‘Lots of people laughed when I told them Aladdin would hit a Billy 6 months ago,’ he said. ‘But those who mock you are often too busy laughing to see your light. Just manifest what you want and work your a** off.’

This has also been a big year for Disney film-wise. Since the release of Aladdin, the movie company have released the long-awaited fourth sequel in the Toy Story franchise, Toy Story 4, which grossed $238 million in its opening weekend, becoming the highest-grossing animated movie of 2019.  (AFP)
