A woman has been sentenced to one year in jail or a fine of Shs300,000 ($2,967) for faking her own kidnap ostensibly to test her husband’s love for her.
The Ugandan woman, Aminah Mirembe, 23, is a resident of Nakawa, a Kampala suburb. She appeared at City Hall Court presided over by magistrate Patrick Talisuna and admitted to faking her own kidnap, reports Daily Monitor on Tuesday.
“The convict is hereby sentenced to a fine of Shs300,000 and in defaulting, she should be imprisoned for one year,” said the magistrate.
When Mr. Talisuna asked Mirembe why she put her loved ones on tension, she said: “I was testing my husband’s love for me.”
Mirembe was charged with one count of giving false information to police about her kidnap.
During mitigation, the state prosecutor, Ms Lydia Batiibwe, asked the court to give the convict a deterrent sentence, asserting that cases of self-kidnap are on the increase in Uganda and therefore a severe punishment would deter would-be offenders.
The prosecution stated that Mirembe on May 26 at Ntinda in Kampala gave a police officer C/ASP Moses Acaye false information that she had been kidnapped and her abductors were demanding a ransom of Shs500,000 ($4,945).
The prosecution further contended that Mr. Acayo devoted his precious time and state resources to investigate the bogus kidnap. (Agency Report)
