The Lagos State Government had on Saturday declared June 12, 2018 as public holiday, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the annulled 1993 presidential election adjudged to be have won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

The state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, said the significance of June 12, 1993 elections, adjudged as the freest and fairest in the history of Nigeria, would always be a reference point in the State’s quest to entrench true democracy in service to the people.

Commending President Buhari’s recent declaration of June as the new Democracy Day, the governor said the singular act would forever ensure that Chief MKO Abiola and other martyrs of democracy who laid down their lives in the struggle to entrench good governance did not do so vain.

The Lagos State Government also demanded that the video and voice records of late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M. K. O.) Abiola’s last moments, be made public.

The government spoke through Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, at this year’s International Archives Day commemoration organised by the State Records and Archives Bureau, LASRAB, in Ikeja. According to Bamigbetan, “as we get ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the death of late Chief M. K. O. Abiola, it is a remarkable and evolutionary day, and it is very evolutionary to demand that the records of that day, when he took that tea, be revealed.”

Bamigbetan stated that public disclosure of activities that led to the death of Abiola will help confirm or deny the claim that he died after taking tea during the meeting.
