Awujale Stool: Group faults Sanwo-Olu’s alleged interference in selection process
A concerned group has alleged that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu convened the Ijebu Ode council of Kingmakers and offered them a blank check to select one of the aspirants, Prince Abimbola Onabanjo, as the next Awujale, insisting that the governor lacked the power to impose a candidate on the people of Ijebuland.
The statement reads in part: “Ordinarily, we did not want to join the fray. We had hoped that reason would prevail and due process would guide the selection of our paramount ruler. However, seeing that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing, we have elected to raise the alarm over the unwholesome activities of Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who is meddling in the whole selection process.”
The group warned that if Sanwo-Olu does not desist from his antics, it would “mobilise Ijebu traditional worshippers to storm the seat of government in Lagos State and disrupt government activities.
Relatedly, the Council of Otunbas, who made their intention known in a letter jointly signed by the Chairman of the council, B. Alebiosu, Vice Chairman, Akin Osiyemi, and Secretary, Ayodele Osibogun, and addressed to the Awujale Interregnum Administrative Council, noted that members of the council, despite the title, have the right to become the next Awujale.
