Residents Flee As Bandits Kill Soldier, Loot Plateau Community
Residents of Zurak and Sabon Gari communities in Bashar district of Wase local government area of Plateau State are currently fleeing following two separate attacks in the areas.
This follows an attack which led to the killing of a soldier and five residents of Zurak district.
Three soldiers were declared missing after the attack.
Residents said the bandits first targeted security points in the communities and later burnt down houses and shops where they looted food items.
Our correspondent reports that following the attack, there was reinforcement of security personnel from Wase town, the headquarters of Wase, to the affected communities.
However, despite the deployment of security personnel, residents fled to Kampani, a neighboring village to Zurak, for safety, adding that men, women, and children were seen trekking with their luggage.
Ya’u Usman, a resident of Zurak, told Daily Trust that people were afraid of the unknown, hence the need to run to safer communities.
He said, “We have to flee the community despite the reinforcement of security personnel. We understand that they are doing their best but the bandits often come in their numbers, overpowering the security. Our lives are not guaranteed. People cannot continue to live in fear all the time. When law and order are restored, we will return.”
When contacted on Tuesday, Captain JA John, Media Information Officer, Operation Enduring Peace, said he would investigate the incident and revert.
Our correspondent reports that villages in Wase LGA have been suffering from attacks, resulting in deaths.
On December 21, 2025, about 28 travelers from the Zak community were abducted while on their way to attend Maulud in Sabon Layi community of Bashar district.
