Waste management: Visionscape employs 350 scavengers
In a bid to build local capacity in waste management, Visionscape Sanitation says it has registered and inducted 350 scavengers into its operations.
The company stated this in a statement while disclosing that it had led reputable environmentalists to its engineered sanitary landfill at Epe, Lagos State, in commemoration of the 2018 World Forest Day.
The day, which held on Wednesday, was designated by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
To mark the day, countries were encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organise activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns towards having sustainable cities.
Visionscape Sanitation had won the Epe landfill tender process in August 2016 and had commenced its construction a year later.
According to the company, the tour’s purpose was to give members of the public an insight into the workings of an engineered sanitary landfill and the process of waste management within a controlled environment.
The firm’s Landfill Operations Manager, Mr. Sumeet Singh, said an average of 30 trucks from various waste collection operators in the state were already visiting the landfill daily to dispose of waste, which is then levelled to prevent pilling.
Singh added that the landfill was expected to serve as an eco-park, where waste-to-energy plans, wastewater treatment, material recycling and other vital environmental-friendly procedures are carried out daily.
