Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud, his Norwegian counterpart, to secure his first US Open title.

In a four-set thriller, Alcaraz beat Ruud 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7-1), 6-3 to clinch the title on Sunday at Flushing Meadows, New York.

The victory made him the youngest ever world No 1 since Juan Carlos Ferrero in 2003.

The 19-year-old also became the first player since Andre Agassi — in the 2005 US Open — to reach the final after winning three straight five-set ties.

The Spaniard is the 57th Grand Slam men’s champion and 30th US Open men’s champion in the Open Era.

Courtesy of the victory, it is now 3-0 for the Spaniard against Ruud.
