Anger over purported plan by Boris Johnson to return as PM
Purported plan by former UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson to return as PM is being met with angry outburst.
PM Liz Truss, who took over from Johnson announced her resignation on Thursday after just 44 days as leader, following a disastrous performance, impeding serious on the nation’s economy.
Immediately she resigned, the name of Johnson’s return was being reported by some newspapers.
His allies are said to be pushing for his comeback to 10 Downing Street, as he is still eligible as a Conservative party man.
Reports surfaced in the Times and Daily Telegraph that her predecessor was thinking of making a comeback.
This morning former culture secretary Nadine Dorries said there was only “one person” who had been “elected by the British public with a manifesto and a mandate until January ‘25”.
The well-known Johnson loyalist also tweeted to say “MPs must demand [the] return of Boris Johnson – if not it has to be leadership election or a GE [general election]”.
James Duddridge, the current minister of state for international trade and a former parliamentary private secretary of Johnson’s, according to BBC was more direct.
“I hope you enjoyed your holiday boss,” he tweets. “Time to come back. Few issues at the office that need addressing.” He also included a new hashtag that’s doing the rounds: #bringbackboris.
Another Johnson loyalist, Michael Fabricant, says the former PM “may not be the first choice of MPs… but he most certainly is amongst the membership”. Without him, calls for a general election will grow, he warns.
But the Liberal Democrats are calling for Johnson to be barred from standing in the Conservative Leadership election and returning to Number 10.
Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats Daisy Cooper MP said: “The fact that Conservative MPs are even considering putting Boris Johnson back in Number 10 shows how out of touch they really are. They think there’s one rule for them and another for everyone else.
“Boris Johnson was forced to resign in disgrace after countless lies, scandals and failures. He shattered public trust in the government and plunged the UK into a political crisis. He must never be allowed near Downing Street again.
“The future of our country should be in the hands of voters, not the Conservative MPs who have caused all this chaos.”
