Bauchi Shuts Cattle Markets In 4 LGAs Over Security Concerns
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has approved the immediate closure of cattle markets in Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas of the state.
The decision, contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, is aimed at addressing security concerns linked to the use of the markets for criminal activities.
According to the statement, the markets have been associated with cattle rustling, killings, kidnapping for ransom, extortion, illegal arms transactions and illicit financial dealings.
It added that the markets had become targets for criminal elements who steal livestock, terrorise traders and disrupt food supply chains, resulting in significant economic losses and threatening the livelihoods of affected communities.
The affected markets include 14 in Alkaleri LGA — Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, Yalo, Gwana, Yalon Gurza, Kuka, Rimi, Pali, Bokwas, Kwaimawa, Mai Ari, Gajin Duguri and Maina Ma’aji.
In Kirfi LGA, the affected markets are Lariski Bara, Sharfuri (night market), Cheledi and Boli.
Five markets were also listed in Tafawa Balewa LGA — Burga, Bununu, Ball, Kulumbo and Zwall.
In Bauchi LGA, the popular Liman Katagum cattle market is also affected.
The government said the measure is temporary and will remain in force until there is a significant improvement in the security situation.
Security agencies have been directed to ensure full compliance with the order.
The statement also urged local government councils and traditional rulers, including emirs, district heads and village heads, to sensitise residents and ensure effective monitoring of compliance.(daily trust)
