Soldiers, herdsmen in gun duel in Benue
The Theatre Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Maj. Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, on Saturday confirmed that the military engaged herdsmen in the troubled Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Guma and Logo Local Government Areas have been under heavy attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen since January 1 this year, leading to loss of over 500 persons.
The commandant said no casualty was recorded on either side.
He said, “Our men went on patrol along Gbajimba and encountered the herdsmen but we have no record of death or injury yet because our troops are still on the field. However, I’ll let you know as soon as possible.”
Investigations by our correspondent however revealed that suspected herdsmen in the early hours of Saturday ambushed the military personnel who were on surveillance in the Guma Local Government Area, killing one soldier and injuring two others.
It was gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of the day when the soldiers were patrolling the Gbajimba-Iyordye-Akaahena Road and were suddenly ambushed by the herdsmen. (Punch)
