Emilia Clarke may hate the term ‘strong female character,’ so we’ll instead call the majority of the remaining main cast of ‘Game of Thrones’ well-rounded and well-realized women. The HBO fantasy epic has always been borne on the back of its female leads, and now Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister will be clashing for the iron throne in the upcoming final season.
While most fan speculation is over who will eventually win the political and military conflicts of the show and be the last man (or woman) standing, an eagle-eyed fan picked up on a subtle similarity between Daenerys and another of the show’s main female protagonists, Sansa Stark.
The two have never met in the show, but redditor rnplzhlp pointed out that their journeys and evolution as characters mimic each other. Both began as pawns being used by men, as Daenerys was used as a bartering chip by her brother and Sansa was House Lannister’s plaything.
After escaping from their bonds to these men, they were both instructed in how to maneuver through politics by wily veterans of the game, with Sansa being taught by the cunning Littlefinger and Daenerys learning from experience by dealing with Xaro Xhoan Daxos. Finally, after learning all they could from their unwitting mentors, both women thanked them for the lessons they taught before having them executed.
Daenerys locked Xaro and her treacherous handmaiden Doreah in the empty vaults of Qarth after thanking him for teaching her about treachery in politics. Sansa had her sister, Arya, slit Littlefinger’s throat after she thanked him for stripping her of her naivety. While the two have not yet met, Daenerys is headed north, so their first contact will probably happen early on in Season 8.
