Ex-council chair hails Obasa, declares bid for Lagos assembly seat
A former local government boss in Agege, Gbenga Abiola, has declared his intention to contest the Agege Constituency I seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections.
He made the declaration on Sunday in Dopemu, where he praised the Speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, describing him as a mentor and benefactor.
The former Vice Chairman and ex–Sole Administrator of Agege Local Government said his ambition is conditional on Obasa’s decision not to seek re-election, stressing that he remains loyal to the long-serving lawmaker.
“It pleases me to announce my intention to represent Agege Constituency I and continue the sterling performance of our leader,” Abiola said. “If he decides not to run, I am ready for the assignment.”
He credited Obasa for his political growth and expressed confidence in his ability to sustain the developmental strides recorded in the constituency.
Abiola highlighted his experience in grassroots governance, noting that he had served in multiple capacities, including as one of the youngest council administrators in Lagos State. He said his track record and community engagement have earned him broad support.
Promising not to disappoint constituents, Abiola pledged inclusive representation and continued development if elected. He also cautioned against violence in the build-up to party primaries, advocating peaceful political engagement.
“I do not believe in do-or-die politics. If chosen, I will represent the people well,” he said.
Reaffirming his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress, Abiola urged supporters to remain united and follow party directives ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also commended Bola Tinubu for ongoing reforms, expressing optimism about the country’s future.
Supporters at the event said the large turnout reflected confidence in Abiola’s leadership and grassroots appeal, describing him as a committed public servant ready for higher responsibility.
Abiola added that regardless of the election outcome, he would continue to support residents through his foundation and community initiatives.
