IED mistaken for scrap metal explodes, kills 6 Almajiris in Borno

Tragedy occurred in Gubio local government area of Borno State on Saturday when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was mistaken for scrap metal detonated, killing six Quranic school pupils popularly known as Almajirai in Hausa parlance.

The incident occurred when a metal scavenger unknowingly collected and stored various metallic items in a building close to a Tsangaya school, Sunday Vanguard reports.

According to the newspaper, little did the scavenger know that among the collected metal was an abandoned undetonated IED, which exploded at approximately 2 pm, claiming the lives of the children and causing severe bodily harm.

A security source reportedly confirmed the deadly blast to Vanguard.
