BREAKING: 19 Confirmed Dead, Several Injured As Gunmen Invade Plateau Community In Midnight Raid
Tragedy has once again struck Plateau State as heavily armed gunmen launched a devastating midnight assault on Kawel village in the Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area. The unprovoked attack left no fewer than 19 persons dead and several others fighting for their lives with severe gunshot injuries.
The incident, which occurred late Sunday night on June 21, 2026, caught vulnerable residents completely off-guard while they were asleep.
How The Attack Unfolded
Local sources who spoke to 247ureports revealed that the attackers, heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the quiet agrarian village at approximately 11:40 p.m.
Malo Bitrus, a traumatised resident of the area, recounted the horror to our correspondent:
“THE GUNMEN INVADED OUR VILLAGE UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS WHILE PEOPLE WERE FAST ASLEEP. THEY SUDDENLY OPENED FIRE SPORADICALLY, SHOOTING AT ANYTHING IN SIGHT. THE LOUD GUNSHOTS TRIGGERED MASSIVE PANIC, FORCING FAMILIES TO SCAMPER INTO THE SURROUNDING BUSHES FOR SAFETY IN THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT. BY MORNING, WE COUNTED OVER 19 LIFELESS BODIES.”
Youth Leadership Confirms Casualties
Confirming the barbaric raid to 247ureports, the Bokkos Youth Leader, Christopher Luka, described the situation as completely devastating. According to him, intelligence regarding the active invasion reached youth structures shortly after midnight.
“A YOUTH LEADER CALLED ME AROUND 12:00 A.M. CRYING THAT GUNMEN HAD BROKEN INTO KAWEL VILLAGE AND WERE SLAUGHTERING RESIDENTS. SO FAR, WE HAVE 19 CONFIRMED FATALITIES, AND MANY OTHERS WHO SUSTAINED CRITICAL GUNSHOT WOUNDS ARE CURRENTLY BEING EVACUATED TO NEARBY HOSPITALS. IMMEDIATELY I GOT THE DISTRESS CALL, I ALERTED THE SECURITY PERSONNEL STATIONED IN BOKKOS TO INTERVENE, BUT THE DAMAGE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE.”
Rising Insecurity in Bokkos
This latest bloodletting comes barely days after the District Head of Gwande, Saf Samuel Alaket, was ambushed and assassinated by gunmen near the Sha-Daffo boundary within the same Bokkos Local Government Area.
The continuous targeting of Bokkos communities has heightened tensions across the state. Outraged local youths are reportedly demanding a complete overhaul of the security architecture in the local government area, citing a slow response time from tactical teams during midnight invasions.
