Veteran singer and social activist, Charles Oputa, known as Charly Boy, has declared that he will no longer show reverence to Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka.

Charly Boy, a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu, expressed his stance in a statement on his official social media handle on Friday, in response to the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, after Soyinka.

President Tinubu, in a tribute marking Soyinka’s 90th birthday, announced the renaming of the facility in his honour.

In reaction, Charly Boy strongly opposed the decision, lamenting that “the Mighty have fallen, for beans.”

He continued, stating, “Uncle WOLE, I am withdrawing all the respect I once held for you. When late Jimmy Johnson spoke about you in the 90s, I thought it was mere jest. Wow! How some of our once revered figures have succumbed, whether for beans, beans and plantain, or even rice.”
