Nigerians now pay N246,000 on average to travel by flight, a fresh report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown.

The report titled “Transport fare watch” shows that travelling by air nationally costs N123,700 on average for a single journey, meaning a round trip will now cost N247,400.

The flight rate in Niger State is highest at N129,575, while that of the Federal Capital Territory stands at N129,442. The rate for Anambra State stands at N128,773.

The lowest flight rate goes to Zamfara at N102,665, while that of Cross River is N120,088, and Delta, N120,777.

The flight rate for August 2024 shows an increase from the national average in August 2023, which stood at N79,011 and also an increase from the average in July 2024, which was N98,561.

The fall in naira value and increase in the price of aviation fuel have been blamed in part on the hike in the flight rate.

In July, it was reported that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency increased its charges by over 800%.

This development practically means that anyone who earns N70,000, which is the minimum wage, will be unable to afford local air travel, let alone a foreign trip.
