Delta content creator arrested after alleged rape victim dies by suicide
The Delta State police command said it arrested Ifeany Ogbonna, a digital content creator known as “Odogwu of Asaba” for the allegation of rape of a 20-year old lady who later died by suicide.
In a video recorded before her death on Tuesday, the lady alleged that Mr Ogbonna sexually assaulted her after inviting her to Asaba.
“This will be the last video of me, by the time you will be seeing this video, I’m already dead. The cause of death is Odogwu Asaba,” she said in a video recorded on Tuesday.
She said she met the suspect online on Monday and had reached out to him for financial assistance to address a family problem.
“I told him I was going through some problems and needed money to sort out a family issue. I was worried and told him,” she said.
According to the victim, Mr Ogbonna initially demanded sex in exchange for financial help.
She said she declined the request and instead sought only his advice.
“He wanted to sleep with me, but I couldn’t. I texted him that I needed his advice,” she said.
In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesman, Bright Edafe said the suspect who is now 40-year-old took the victim to a hotel and raped her.
“The arrest followed a petition received by the Command alleging that on 1 June 2026, the deceased travelled to Asaba at the invitation of the suspect, who had offered to train her in content creation, a programme he reportedly promoted through his social media platform,” he said.
According to him, upon the victim’s arrival in Asaba, the suspect allegedly took her to a hotel, where he allegedly raped her and subjected her to physical violence.
Mr Edafe said that she later returned home visibly distressed and disclosed the incident to her parents.
“In the aftermath of the alleged assault, the deceased made a video recording in which she recounted her experience and the emotional distress she suffered following the incident,” he said.
He added that she subsequently died by suicide by ingesting a toxic substance despite efforts to save her life.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command Effurun to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations.
“Acting on the directive, operatives of the Command swiftly commenced investigation, leading to the arrest of Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as “Odogwu of Asaba.”
He added that during preliminary investigation, the suspect reportedly made useful statements to the police, while further investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
