N800billion Not Enough To Fix Nigerian Bad Roads – Works Minister, Dave Umahi Seeks Increased Budget

Dave Umahi, President Bola Tinubu’s Minister of Works, has decried the N800billion allocation for road infrastructure in the 2025 budget proposal, describing it as grossly inadequate.

Speaking on Friday during the 2025 budget defence session organised by the House Committee on Works, Umahi urged the committee to reconsider the allocation.

“We plead with you to help us. N800billion cannot do anything for us. It cannot address our road needs, so we appeal for your assistance,” Umahi said.

The minister emphasised the need for sufficient funding to complete ongoing projects and initiate new ones nationwide, highlighting that the current allocation leaves numerous projects unfinished.

“When the nation is in recession, borrowing to invest in infrastructure is essential. That’s how you come out of a recession,” Umahi stated.

He stressed that infrastructure development would stimulate economic activities, benefitting food sellers, sand suppliers, and other stakeholders.

The Committee Chairman, Akin Alabi, pledged to summon Finance Minister, Wale Edun, and Budget Office Head, Tanimu Yakub, to address the low budget allocation.
