Seyi Tinubu can aspire to be governor – Arewa Yoruba Youths

The Association of Arewa Yoruba Youths (AAYY) has expressed support for the rumored governorship ambition of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, affirming his constitutional right to contest any elective position in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the group’s National Coordinator, Ambassador Lawal Hussein Taiye, the AAYY emphasized that Seyi Tinubu, like any Nigerian citizen, is eligible to seek public office.

“It’s not a crime; he is constitutionally qualified to aspire for any elective position like any other Nigerian citizen,” the group stated.

Hussein drew parallels with political families in other democracies, citing the Bush family in the United States. “President George H.W. Bush served as the 41st President, and his son, George W. Bush, became the 43rd President. Additionally, two of President Bush’s sons served as governors of Florida and Texas without controversy. Similarly, in Nigeria, Senator Bukola Saraki served as governor of Kwara State from 2003 to 2011, while his sister, Gbemisola Saraki, served as a senator during the same period,” he noted.

He stressed the need to encourage qualified individuals to contribute to national development, regardless of their family background.

“What we should be advocating for are leaders of unquestionable character who can drive the country toward progress and development. Focusing on trivial matters will only hinder our journey to achieving Nigeria’s potential,” Hussein said.

He added that if Seyi Tinubu becomes governor of Lagos State, it could mark the beginning of a significant transformation for the state. “Any Nigerian qualified for a position should be encouraged and supported, as the dividends of good governance benefit everyone.”

The group reiterated its mission to promote a better, united, and peaceful Nigeria, stressing the importance of unity in achieving national progress.

“Nigeria is blessed with abundant human and natural resources that can enable us to compete favorably with any country in the world. However, our focus on divisive issues has kept us from reaching our full potential as a nation. It’s time we prioritize what truly matters to move forward as a united country,” the statement concluded.
