JUST IN: Lagos arrests miscreants extorting pedestrians on Oshodi Bridge
The Lagos State Government has arrested miscreants extorting money from pedestrians using the closed Oshodi Bridge in Lagos.
Recall The Nation reported on Monday that a large crowd of commuters were sighted on an alternative pedestrian bridge in Oshodi.
This was due to the closure of the pedestrian bridge linking Oshodi Bus Terminals 2 and 3.
The state government ordered the bridge’s immediate closure in January, citing concerns over its safety and structural integrity.
Owing to the viral videos and photos showing congestion on the alternative bridge, the state government assured commuters that efforts were underway to alleviate the overcrowding.
Reacting to the extortion on the bridge, Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi said: “Our attention has been drawn to the fact that miscreants have been extorting money from pedestrians on the Oshodi Bridge, which was closed by the authorities a few months ago because of structural issues.
“These individuals were arrested this morning, and we will continue to make further arrests if such activities persist.
“The other bridge is available for usage whilst the necessary repairs on the closed bridge is ongoing.”
