Four Zamfara polytechnic students regain freedom
The Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly rescued the remaining four students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, in Zamfara state, who were kidnapped from their residence on June 2.
The students, made up of three males and one female, were freed late on Wednesday during an intelligence-led operation “without the payment of any ransom”.
One of the suspected kidnappers was arrested during the operation while others were killed.
The students were among seven undergraduates abducted after gunmen attacked their residence in the Low-Cost area of Kaura Namoda town.
Speaking to TheCable after the abduction, Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson of the Zamfara police command, had said one of the students escaped during the attack, leaving six others in captivity.
“The school premises have been fortified with adequate security personnel, making it extremely difficult for bandits to penetrate,” he said.
“One of the students went outside during the night, claiming he wanted to urinate. In the process, he left the door open. Coincidentally, bandits passing through the area entered the house and abducted the students.”
The police spokesperson added that operatives of the command’s violent crime response unit (VCRU), working with troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, launched a coordinated operation to track the abductors and rescue the victims.
Two of the six students were released earlier, while “sustained intelligence-led operations by security agencies” led to the rescue of the remaining four students on Wednesday.(TheCable)
