The Jigawa State Police Command said it has launched a full investigation into a disturbing incident involving a newlywed groom and three of his friends, following the death of his wife just days after their wedding.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the incident occurred on April 26, 2025, at about 10:00 p.m.

The Divisional Police Officer of Sule Tankarkar Division initiated the investigation after receiving a distressing report involving a 20-year-old groom, Auwal Abdulwahab, and his associates, Nura Basiru, Muttaka Lawan, and Hamisu Musa, all aged 20 and residents of Tungo village, Albasu District, Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police spokesperson, preliminary findings allege that the groom conspired with his friends to forcefully coerce his bride into non-consensual sexual activity within their matrimonial home.

In the course of the incident, the bride reportedly raised the alarm but tragically died.

“The bride, who had reportedly disagreed with her husband on marital relations since their wedding, raised the alarm following the incident,” the police said.

Upon receiving the report, a team of officers led by the Divisional Police Officer rushed to the scene.

Adam stated that the victim’s body was evacuated to Gumel General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death, adding that the corpse was subsequently released to her family for burial rites.

Adam said that all four suspects have been arrested and are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

They are likely to face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide under the relevant laws of Jigawa State.

“The prime suspect (groom), whose identity is being identified as one Auwal Abdulwahab ‘m’ age 20 years, and his accomplices could face two charges under [relevant laws of the jurisdiction], including criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide,” the police command said.

The Commissioner of Police, CP A.T. Abdullahi, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dutse for further discreet investigation.

The police assured that the suspects will be prosecuted accordingly upon completion of the investigation.

The Command also reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and called on members of the public to remain calm as due process unfolds.(SaharaReporters)
